A Look at the 2025 Gartner® Critical Capabilities for Data Integration Tools Report
Reading Time: 4 minutes

Every year, Gartner releases Critical Capabilities reports that, I feel, provide a rigorous comparison of vendors. They complement the Gartner® Magic Quadrant reports, for a deep understanding of how the different vendors compare. In this post, I’ll be covering the 2025 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Data Integration Tools report, the companion document to the 2025 Gartner® Magic Quadrant for Data Integration Tools, in which, I was happy to report, Denodo was again recognized as a Leader for the sixth year in a row.

Strong Capabilities

This year’s report covers the performance of 27 data integration vendors across 12 Critical Capabilities:

  1. Bulk/Batch Data Movement
  2. Data Replication/Synchronization
  3. Stream Data Integration
  4. Data Virtualization
  5. Advanced Data Transformation
  6. Augmented User Experience
  7. Data Integration for AI
  8. Metadata Management Support
  9. Data Governance Support
  10. DataOps Support
  11. FinOps Support
  12. Deployment Options

The five Use Cases that guide the analysis in this year’s report are:

  1. Data Engineering
  2. Delivering Modern Data Management Architectures
  3. Self-Service Data Integration
  4. Operational Data Integration, and
  5. Supporting AI Projects

In this post, I would like to focus on six of the above Critical Capabilities, as these are the ones that I feel are well aligned with the capabilities of the Denodo Platform:

  1. Data Virtualization
  2. Metadata Management
  3. Data Governance Support
  4. Data Integration for AI
  5. Augmented User Experience
  6. Deployment Options

Data Virtualization

As defined by Gartner in the report, data virtualization is “The ability to execute distributed queries against disparate data sources that are virtually integrated. This includes a distributed query engine, a metadata repository to create virtual data models, and a semantic layer based on the underlying physical models.”

In the report, the Use Case given the greatest weight (10%) by data virtualization is Self-Service Data Integration, and this stands to reason, in my opinion, as replication is a formidable barrier to self-service data access. From the Denodo view, not only does data virtualization avoid replication, but it also enables integration and access in real time. We feel that the Denodo Platform is built on a strong foundation of data virtualization, one that has gained powerful new capabilities over the years.

Metadata Management Support

In the report, the Use Case given the greatest weight (20%) by this capability is Delivering Modern Data Management Architectures. I feel that this is telling, as metadata plays a key role in enabling the critical context layer required by AI agents. From the Denodo perspective, the Denodo Platform centrally manages active metadata not only to streamline data management tasks but also to support modern AI requirements

Data Governance Support

The report defines “data governance support” as “The ability to assist data governance mandates (including data quality, data lineage, policy enforcement, masking, and annotation) while handling data to meet specific use cases such as master data management (MDM) and data sharing.”

By adhering to a logical data management approach, built on data virtualization, Denodo enables data governance and data security policies to be managed from a single point of control, across the entire organization. In the report, the Use Cases given the greatest weight (11%) by this Critical Capability are Delivering Modern Data Management Architectures and Operational Data Management. With the latter, I believe that the operative word is “operational,” which is a key benefit of the Denodo Platform.

Data Integration for AI

In the report, the Use Case given the greatest weight (50%) for this capability is Supporting AI Projects. Denodo understands that organizations have three basic needs when it comes to agentic AI: Live data access, guidance to the “right” data within an organization, and guardrails to keep their AI agents in line with expected behaviors. I believe that Denodo provides all three: Our data virtualization capabilities enable access to live data across disparate sources, our universal semantic layer and rich metadata management capabilities enable organizations to easily establish which data sources are the right ones to supply answers to given questions, and our data governance capabilities enable organizations to control what data AI agents can see, access, and manipulate.

Augmented User Experience

The Use Case given the greatest weight (45%) by Augmented User Experience is, in this report, Self-Service Data Integration, and this makes perfect sense to me. I feel that in this capacity, the Denodo Platform once again has standout features, and the epitome of these is the Denodo Data Marketplace, which combines data virtualization, metadata management, and our universal semantics layer into a powerful user interface that presents data to users as if they were shopping in an online store, but a remarkable one that offers live access to all of its products.

Deployment Options

Finally, Deployment Options is a Critical Capability at which, I believe, Denodo also excels. Denodo can be deployed on premises, in the cloud, or in any hybrid- or multi-cloud configuration. It can deliver views of data, in real time, across over 200 different data sources and enables broad data consumption via SQL, REST, GraphQL, and other standard APIs. In the report, the Use Case given the greatest weight (22%) by this Critical Capability is Operational Data Integration, and this makes sense to me, as the more deployment options available for data integration, the broader the support for operational use cases.

I feel that anyone in need of an advanced, full-featured data integration solution would do well to take a good, long look at the capabilities of the Denodo Platform.
